Stekkjarbakka highway interchange
This interchange consolidates and rationalises the traffic system at one the most chaotic junctions in the capital area. It also allows the safe passage of pedestrians and cyclists between the adjacent housing and commercial areas and the recreational Ellida river valley. The most visible interventions are the two traffic bridges and one footbridge that span the six lane highway. Cast in-situ the bridge decks are of minimal thickness supported on stainless steel columns with a geometry that reduces their perceived size to a minimum. Stainless steel handrails reflect the geometry of the columns appearing massive from some angles and almost disappearing from others whilst imparting a sense of security to those using the bridge.
